Product Information
This book is the story of a football coach. Andrew C. "Scrappy" Moore joined the staff of the University of Chattanooga in 1926 and became head coach and athletic director in 1931. He coached his last game on November 18, 1967, and retired with the longest tenure of any collegiate coach at one school until that time. His record stood at 171-147-13. His teams played sixty-two games against some of the greatest university teams in the United States. He held victory over Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and, finally, the University of Tennessee.
Scrappy Moore's career spanned a half-century. He played for coaches who had played for Knute Rockne. Every Tuesday morning during football season, he took a call from Paul "Bear" Bryant to help the younger Bryant craft plans for the University of Alabama's next opponent. Scrappy Moore was at the innovative forefront of moving football from its oldest roots to the modern game that we know today. He was invited to coach at major colleges and in professional ranks. His love for Chattanooga, and especially the challenge of leading a small college to compete with gridiron giants, kept him at his beloved university for almost four decades.
But Scrappy Moore was much more than a football coach. He was a man of matchless character and integrity who became a role model for young men of parts of three generations. These young men, with great affection for their former coach, went on to coaching professions and many other professions that still have an impact on their communities.
This book is for athletic fans, but much more, it is for anyone who wants to gain a sense of what life was about in the United States in the mid-twentieth century. This is a story of a unique type of person who lived in a unique country at a unique time. People like Scrappy Moore believed they could live their lives in a way that would make a great difference -- and people like Scrappy did! His imprint is indelible. The story of his life—his legend--must be passed to coming generations.
